About the School

The School of Social Sciences and Humanities was founded in 2014 as part of HSE’s new policy to create big faculties which unite areas of teaching and research to provide education in humanities and social sciences to international standards. This approach combines acquiring an in-depth theoretical knowledge of contemporary research methods with practically oriented courses to give graduates the best chance for professional success in both academic and applied fields.

In Spring 2014 the structural changes to create big or mega faculties in keeping with best practice in the world’s most prestigious universities began on the HSE Moscow campus. Big faculties are subject clusters, they contain schools or departments set up on the basis of existing faculties, divisions or departments and also laboratories, research centres and other sections.

Since September 2014 the School of Social Sciences and Humanities at HSE’s St Petersburg campus comprises Departments of Sociology, History and Public Administration, as well as Department of Asian and African Studies.

The head of the School is Daniil Alexandrov, professor and member of HSE’s Academic Council, Head of the Laboratory of Sociology in Education and Science.

The School’s Academic Supervisor is now Christopher Gerry.
