The School of Social Sciences and Humanities was founded in 2014 as part of HSE’s new policy to create big faculties which unite areas of teaching and research. These faculties provide education in the humanities and social sciences which meets international standards. This new approach combines in-depth theoretical knowledge of contemporary research methods with practically-oriented courses to give graduates the best chance of professional success in both academic and applied fields.
In Spring 2014, the structural changes to create these 'mega' faculties in keeping with best practice at the world’s most prestigious universities began at HSE Moscow. Big faculties are subject clusters containing schools or departments built on the foundations of existing faculties, divisions or departments as well as laboratories, research centres and other sections.
Since September 2014, the School of Social Sciences and Humanities at HSE’s St Petersburg campus comprises the Departments of Sociology, History and Public Administration, as well as the Department of Asian and African Studies.
The head of the School is Daniil Alexandrov, professor and member of HSE’s Academic Council and Head of the Laboratory of Sociology in Education and Science.
The School’s Academic Supervisor is now Christopher Gerry.
